When should you take iron, and away from what?

·
Iron is absorbed better on an empty stomach, though some people find that uncomfortable; it is usually spaced apart from calcium, tea and coffee, and vitamin C increases its absorption.

The most common question about iron is not how much, but when. The answer involves a trade-off.

Empty stomach or with food?

Iron is absorbed better on an empty stomach. Some people find that uncomfortable or feel nauseated.

If taking it with food is more comfortable and means you actually keep going, taking it with food every day beats taking it on an empty stomach and stopping after a week. Consistency matters more than the theoretically optimal moment.

Should you space it from calcium and zinc?

Calcium and zinc in large amounts compete with iron for absorption. The simplest approach is to separate them in time: iron at one meal, calcium at another.

Neither has to be given up. They just do not need to be taken in the same moment.

Why is vitamin C suggested alongside it?

The annex to Thai Ministry of Public Health Notification No. 447 (B.E. 2566) recognises that vitamin C increases iron absorption. That is why many formulations combine the two, and why taking iron with a citrus fruit is a reasonable habit.

What about tea and coffee?

Both contain compounds that interfere with the absorption of plant-source iron. If you drink them regularly, try moving them away from the meal where you are counting on the iron.

What if it upsets your stomach?

Try taking it with food, or splitting the daily amount into two smaller occasions rather than one. If that does not help, ask a pharmacist or doctor rather than adjusting the amount yourself.

How do you keep it up?

Attach it to something you already do every day, such as breakfast or brushing your teeth. Keep it somewhere visible. Treat the amount on the label as a ceiling.

If you take prescription medication, are pregnant or are breastfeeding, speak to a doctor or pharmacist first.
